As every wood worker knows you can spend a lifetime as well as a fortune collecting wood working tools. But there are a couple of necessary tools for a home workshop. There are three basic tools that every DIY woodworking shop must have. The first is a good Delta table saw they can be used for ripping and crosscutting. The next tool is a band saw although several cuts that can be accomplished with a band saw can also be made with a saber saw I believe the band saw is a necessity. And finally all wood working shops must have a router.
Table saws have three basic styles a contractors style table saw, a hybrid Delta table saw and a cabinet style Delta table saw. The contractors style is usually the least expensive and is built to collapse and be stowed in the back of a truck, this makes it a good choice for the do-it-yourselfer who has limited space. A cabinet style Delta table saw is usually more heavy-duty and has at least a 3 hp motor on it and utilizes a 10 or 12 diameter blade. These are meant to be used in one place so you need to have a dedicated spot for it. They are usually bigger than the other styles of table saws and are built to last a lifetime. A hybrid table saw falls between the others it is generally a lighter duty unit like that of the contractors Delta table saw but built in a cabinet these are a good choice for the budget minded do-it-yourself woodworker.
Routers are an indispensable tool that all woodworkers need. Today router bits can be bought in an unlimited number of different configuration. Whether you want to round off a corner or you are building raised panel doors a woodworking router is indispensable. Router bits are available with three shank sizes 1/4″, 3/8″ and 1/2″ most router bits on the market today are anti kickback.
A Delta the band saw allows the woodworker to cut intricate curves and circles and also allows the woodworker to re-saw their stock. Yes one can cut circles with a saber saw but the band saw will let you to do this much faster and with greater accuracy. Band saws are available in a bench top style or a floor model. Bench top styles usually have a smaller throat clearance, generally in the 6 inch range where as floor models generally start out at about 12 inches and go up from there most of your larger commercial band saws have a least a 20 inch throat.
