Home Improvement Advice: Aluminium Gutters

As a homeowner, you are expected to spend some time making sure your guttering system is up to scratch. Estate agents will be able to advise you on the saleability of your home, but one of the most common requirements is that your gutters do not have bent areas in them. Clean and well-maintained gutters add to your home’s saleability. If you want something that is easy to maintain then a good choice is aluminium gutters.

We would recommend that you clean your gutters a couple of times each year to keep them in great condition. You don’t want to suffer guttering blockages caused by leaves etc, so a certain level of minor maintenance is naturally required. It’s important to make sure that the rain isn’t spilling over the top of your gutter and onto your foundation. Water damage is a nightmare, and wet foundations are best avoided.

It is suggested that you clean your gutters in the Autumn after all the leaves have fallen from the surrounding trees, and in the Spring. Keep an eye on any rust development in your aluminium gutters. Be sure to check if there’s anything dangerous about your guttering, such as loose, rusty nails. It is also essential that you check your gutters are appropriately attached to the house, in order to prevent them coming loose.

Remove the tree debris or suchlike from your guttering by simply hosing it down. This will also help you to make sure that your downspout isn’t clogged with debris. A good tip to remember is that if you find the water isn’t trickling down the spout properly then you can remove it and give it a clean and then put it back, which should make it drain fine once again.

Use a plastic diverter to make sure the water coming down the downspout is heading in the right direction. You don’t want the water emptying out on the ground where it will cause erosion.

Another option for you as the homeowner is to consider gutter guards, as this will reduce the guttering maintenance time you have to spend looking after them.

In truth, some people feel that gutter guards are a pricey and unnecessary addition to their home guttering system. Of course, it is important to remember that smaller natural debris can still enter the gutter, so this will need periodically checking. Natural matter always breaks down and this will, over time, form some sort of debris in your guttering system. Also, debris can build up over the gutter guard screening that will have to be manually cleaned off. Whereas gutter guards can help many homeowners, many feel that they can actually do more harm than good and tend to steer clear of them.

For an efficient guttering choice without the hassle, try looking at aluminium gutters and take the weight off your shoulders.
