How To Handle Basement Waterproofing Repair

Basement waterproofing is important for every home, since too much water or even moisture in the basement could cause health and even structural issues. The extra moisture can even attract vermin like termites which can lead to even bigger structural problems.

If your home’s basement tends to hold water or even flood at certain times of the year, you should seriously consider some of the following ways to waterproof your basement.

1. Install basement window covers. Covering up the more obvious ways that water can seep into your basement like windows and window wells and even exterior stairways if you have an exterior entryway are all great tips. Either buy the covers and caps at your local hardware store or hire a professional to do the basement waterproofing for you.

2. Check around the perimeter of your home for water buildup. Do this right after it rains or after a snow melt. If you notice heavy water buildup, it’s a good idea to work with a basement waterproofing professional to devise a way to redirect the water away from the house by way of landscaping or other means. For minor water buildup, you may only need to fill in some of the visible cracks in the basement walls with caulk.

3. Check your roof, gutters and downspouts for drainage issues. Get out your rain slicker and boots, since the only way to truly see how these things are behaving is during a heavy rainstorm. See if the water is flowing away from the house or if it’s piling up in one spot. Look up to see if water is pouring over the edges of your gutters. If it is, you may need to clean them out and/or install a drip edge to put a stop to it. This can be dangerous work and it also needs to be done properly, so seriously consider calling on a pro.

4. Get the outside walls sealed. If all else fails, sealing the outside walls of a home is the most foolproof method of eliminating leakage and seepage problems. This isn’t a DIY job, however. This is a big job that should be handled by pros.

Why Should You Have A Basement Waterproofing System Installed?

Basement waterproofing systems installed by competent professionals are a must for any home that’s at risk for steady and severe basement water build-up. Water buildup often creates pressure that not only leads to leaks, but also offers up the potential for structural damage in the long run and needs to be addressed.
