In-Home Filtration of Municipal Water

Even though municipal water plants have been designed and built to remove the harmful contaminants from drinking water in the United States, there are still areas where either municipal treatment isn’t available or the filtering methods being used aren’t adequate. It’s vital that people filter the water before using it in these areas of the country. If this is something that has been troubling you, and you don’t feel that the water in your home is as clean as you’d like it to be, you can follow these steps in order to give it additional filtering on your own:

1. To start with, you’ll want to add a sediment filtering system. Before being run through a carbon filtration system, all rust, sand, and other large particles will effectively be removed from the water. You’ll save a lot of money with this type of system since it helps keep the more expensive carbon filters from becoming clogged. The most common sediment filters for household use are either the 10” big blue system or the 20” big blue water system. The 20-inch model will filter water more rapidly as well as last longer.

2. If you want to get rid of smells and tastes from the water, it’s important to use a carbon filter. You’ll get to make use of one of the housings discussed previously if you want to make use of a carbon filter. 20-inch housings will provide you with better water filtration speed as mentioned earlier.

If you follow these two steps, you’ll be able to effectively clean all of your water. It’s also important to note that all water shouldn’t be used for drinking purposes. The average homeowner will use most of the water supply for cleaning laundry, bathing, and flushing toilets. After the water has been run through both sediment and carbon filters, it will have been cleaned well enough for these purposes. This water isn’t suitable for drinking though, since it will require additional filtering before it’s safe.

3. Before you can safely drink the water, you’ll need to get rid of harmful contaminants, something that an under-sink or reverse osmosis filtration system will be capable of. Your budget will mainly determine the best system for you to buy. The best choice is a reverse osmosis system. The main problem with this choice however, is that installation is very expensive.
