Reasons to choose solid wood furniture instead of veneer substitutes

Solid wood furniture is fabulous and classic. Whether you love modern day or rustic designs, a solid wood piece of furniture will look fantastic for years.

Oak furniture is probably the most popular and it has been loved for hundreds of years.

Although it undoubtedly looks fine, are there any other benefits of using solid wood? Well of course, there are.

Solid wood is more costly than particle board covered up in a wood veneer but there’s good reason for that - the quality is a great deal higher. Solid wood is structurally more robust and will not bend like a veneer piece of furniture can - this is particularly important should you be looking for a bookcase.

Another positive point for wood is the fact it can be fixed fairly easily if it gets damaged. The broken parts can be filled and finished with timber treatments. Particleboard conversely is very difficult to mend. This is often due to structural failure and this type of thing is just too major a fault to patch up.

Moving particleboard furniture can generate problems because it ideally should be dismantled first to safeguard it from knocks.

Solid furniture can last for many years and can be seen as an investment. A good looking piece also makes a great family heirloom and it will be able to give enjoyment to your relatives long after you have no more requirement for it.

Should you have no-one to pass your furniture on to, solid wood will have a much higher resale value than particleboard (which often has no real value whatsoever).

There are lots of types of wood like pine, ash and oak so you can choose something that satisfies your requirements. All of these woods have their own qualities and attraction so make sure you find a showroom to view a good selection and you will find that you are attracted to one wood over all of the others.

It can also be finished with a natural wax or a tinted wax. Stains and paints could even be applied but wood is so beautiful anyway that you should consider changing the colour very carefully, however it can still be sanded back and given a natural wax or varnish at a later date (something you can’t do with veneer).

On balance, wood by far outweighs veneered particleboard as the sensible choice for any home. So long as you are able to afford it, invest in solid wood - you won’t be sorry. If the price is initially off-putting, bear in mind that in time it could even work out less expensive because you are unlikely to ever need to replace it.
