The 5 Best Methods to Have an Energy Efficient House
Now, more than even, it’s important to have an energy-efficient house. When you reduce the amount of energy you use, you save yourself money and help to save the planet at the same time. And you can make that happen by only making a few easy changes that will give you a more energy-efficient house.
One of the easiest ways to get an energy-efficient house is to change all the lightbulbs in your house over to fluorescent. You’ve probably already got a few in your house, but if you commit to changing all of them over, it will really make a difference. Fluorescent bulbs have improved a lot over the last few years, and you now have a lot more options, including dimmable lights and lights that come with a standard outside bulb cover. And although fluorescent bulbs are more expensive than incandescent ones, they last many times longer than traditional bulbs, making them an easy, energy-efficient choice.
To have an even more energy-efficient house, turn down your water heater. Though you may not have realized it, you can adjust the heat setting on your water heater. If you can get your tap water so hot that it will scald you, then you need to turn your hot water heater down. Because the hot water heater doesn’t need to work as hard, this will help you save energy and make your house more energy-efficient.
One way to get a more energy-efficient house that is almost effort-free is to get a rain barrel. A rain barrel, when places under your downspout, will collect all the rainwater and store it. Then, instead of having to use water and power using the hose to water your garden, you use the water from the barrel. Another energy-efficient house tip is to use the water from your dehumidifier to water your house plants instead of pouring the water down the drain.
Most people don’t do this, but it will help give you an energy-efficient house. By unplugging your larger appliances (like TVs) when not in use, you can save the amount of power the use by being plugged in, even when they’re not on. Of course, you can’t unplug your fridge or stove easily, but with most houses now having multiple TVs, even that can make a difference.
If you’re rally committed to having a more energy-efficient house, start looking in to supplying your own power using a renewable form of energy, such as solar or wind power. In the past, it was way too expensive for the average homeowner to be able to afford, but you can now build your own renewable energy source so you can have the most energy-efficient house possible starting at less than $200.
