What Do Insurance Companies Stipulate for Alarms?

How to Get An Insurance Approved Burglar Alarm
So many burglar alarm companies, but which ones will get you an insurance approved alarm? Alarms companies in Bristol lead the way.

National Security Inspectorate (NSI) and SSAIB Approval
In Britain there are two organisations that inspect security alarm companies: the National Security Inspectorate and the SSAIB. Insurance companies demand that commercial and home alarms are installed by one of the intruder alarm companies certified with these bodies. Make sure that your chosen alarm company is registered with one of these organisations to ensure you are insured.

Home Intruder Alarms
Domestic insurance companies generally insist that an alarm is maintained under a maintenance contract by an NSI or SSAIB certified company. Several insurers then offer a reduced price for insurance premiums, after all home owners are more likely to call in their alarm maintenance provider when faults occur if they are covered by an alarm service contract and the insurance company recognises this probability in its pricing.

Security Alarm Systems for Business Use
Company managers often find that it is a condition of their insurance cover that they install and service a security system. Sometimes insurers specify a grade 2 or 3 system in accordance with the EN50131 standards and also specify if it should include 24 hr monitoring by an alarm receiving centre and/or a police response.

Company insurers can stipulate a BT Redcare GSM system or Dualcom GPRS system as they use two methods of signalling a triggered alarm. If a phone line is severed or develops a fault, signals are sent via the GPRS or GSM mobile network, rendering these systems much more effective in deterring break ins and catching criminals in the unfortunate event of a burglary.

ACPO Regulations
The Association of Chief Police Officers also stipulate that alarms are fitted by NSI and SSAIB approved suppliers. Your alarm firm should also be listed with them, especially if you have to have a police response to be insured.

Burglar alarm systems, installed to EN50131 and ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) standards, by an alarm supplier listed with the NSI or SSAIB are the only ones that receive an automatic police response. Bristol alarms are an example of this type of firm.

Lower Priced Insurance Premiums
In mid 2007 Norwich Union (now Aviva) Risk Services encouraged UK businesses to put in alarms fitted by NSI or SSAIB listed companies. According to their research, 25% of companies may have insufficient alarm protection. In addition they recommend installing an intruder alarm in domestic buildings too and keeping it serviced once a year. Aviva is one of the major insurance companies that do lower premiums when an appropriate alarm system is installed.
