The Plain Fact behind Le Corbusier Sofa LC3
Though he was basically acknowledged for his work in architecture, the Swiss-born French architect Le Corbusier is also accepted for the legacy he left behind in the field of furniture design. accepted as one of the leading fathers of the modernism movement of the early 20th century, Le Corbusier used the characteristics of modern architecture into making chairs, couches, and other furnishings that are light, easy and functional. And one example of such works by Le Corbusier that has all of these features is the Le Corbusier Sofa LC3.
Fraction of the LC3 set which also comprises the LC3 Ottoman and the LC3 Meridienne, the Le Corbusier Sofa LC3 is a two to three-seat capacity sofa made up of a black leather seat and cushions surrounded by a rigid steel frame. The LC3 sofa, as it was in othet times called, was created by Le Corbusier in 1928 in cooperation with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, and is based on his Grand Comfort armchair design.
Made up of just around two parts, the Le Corbusier Sofa LC3 is evenly simple in design. Its most distinctive feature, however, is its outer steel frame: rather than being concealed under the layers of padding of the cushions, the frame spreads on the chair on the outside. The frame is completed from industrial grade tubular steel, and is refined to a sparkling finish or coated with layers of chrome plating. The cushions, meaniwhile, are packed with either natural down or polyurethane and coated in black aniline leather.
Though Le Corbusier once uttered that sofas are bourgeois; it is parodixical that one of his most popular designs is the Le Corbusier Sofa LC3. Nowadays the true LC3 collection can be seen in art museums and private collections worldwide, even though re-editions based on the design are largely available on the market. presently the Cassina company of Milan is the licensed maker of the LC3 sofa re-editions.
